Australia - A Pediatrician Specializing in Treating Enuresis and Encopresis
Dr. David Cutting is a valued colleague who is reporting initial success rates of 79% using the bedwetting alarm in his pediatric office
practice in
Melbourne Australia. At six months, 73% continued to be dry and at 24 months, 64% continued dry. It is very rare that a busy practicing physician
is able to systematically conduct follow up research and report on the results of his own treatments. He utilizes
two continence nurses and his
interventions are very elaborate and very, very supportive.

I have been following a yahoogroups group on encopresis. It is led by a young mother who has a child with encopresis who is sensitive
and supportive. It appears to be flourishing with good traffic and new members.

New Zealand Enuresis Encopresis Association
This is a truly unique organization led by parents with a combined interest in both enuresis and Encopresis. My impression is that in many
"socialized medicine" countries much more is asked, expected, and volunteered by families to manage problems with behavioral methods than
here in the USA. The USA appears to be more medicalized and "stuck" on the use of medications and surgical procedures.
Nonretentive Encopresis
While the majority of the cases of Encopresis are of the retentive or "outlet obstruction" variety. Some children pass normal, soft stools, but don't do
it when and where they are supposed to, which is the very definition of encopresis. The medical assessment is usually normal, and signs of
constipation are noticeably absent. This link takes you to the original article entitled, "Treatment Guidelines for Primary Nonretentive Encopresis and
Stool Toileting Refusal" in The American Family Physician. You will also find here the means for ordering a pamphlet on this problem. Our Soiling
Solutions® approaches can often be effective for this form of encopresis because they regulate and form habits for urge recognition and voiding
on a regular, preventative schedule. Many medical authorities are pessimistic about the successful treatment of this form of encopresis.
Sleep Disorders
A comprehensive information guide about sleep disorders. Descriptions, symptoms, causes, and treatments of various sleep disorders like sleep

the Center and its research, training, patient education and clinical treatment. The Co-directors of this Center are Douglas A Drossman, M.D. and
William Whitehead, Ph.D., who have been very instrumental in the formation of the International Foundation of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
(see link above) and arranging for its International Conferences on Encopresis and Enuresis.
University of Virginia Children's Medical Center
This is a good, authoritative, independent site for basic, background information on encopresis. It provides a good graphic of the GI tract and
how
retentive encopresis occurs. It provides the best, most complete account of the top-down traditional approach to treating encopresis at www.youcanpooptoo.com where an NIH-sponsored research study is currently underway. We are assisting in recruiting subjects for
that
study
on our pages.
