New Zealand Enuresis / Encopresis Association
This is a truly unique organization led by parents with a combined interest in both enuresis and Encopresis. My impression is that in many
"socialized medicine" countries much more is asked, expected, and volunteered by families to manage problems with behavioral methods than
here in the USA. The USA appears to be more medicalized and "stuck" on the use of medications and surgical procedures.
Nonretentive Encopresis
While the majority of the cases of Encopresis are of the retentive or "outlet obstruction" variety. Some children pass normal, soft stools, but don't do
it when and where they are supposed to, which is the very definition of encopresis. The medical assessment is usually normal, and signs of
constipation are noticeably absent. This link takes you to the original article entitled, "Treatment Guidelines for Primary Nonretentive Encopresis and
Stool Toileting Refusal" in The American Family Physician. You will also find here the means for ordering a pamphlet on this problem. Our Soiling

William Whitehead, Ph.D., who have been very instrumental in the formation of the International Foundation of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
(see link above) and arranging for its International Conferences on Encopresis and Enuresis.
University of Virginia Children's Medical Center
This is a good, authoritative, independent site for basic, background information on encopresis. It provides a good graphic of the GI tract and how
retentive encopresis occurs. It provides the best, most complete account of the traditional approaches to treating encopresis. I have cited the work
of Dr. Daniel Cox and Lee Ritterband from the University of Virginia under the "Articles" and Most Recent Scientific Abstracts pages on this web site.
Stephen Borowitz, M.D., Professor of Pediatrics and Health Evaluation Sciences, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition,
University of Virginia is the author of www.aboutencopresis.com. Personal communication with Dr. Ritterband indicates that a major research study
will likely be undertaken in the Spring of 2010 on their web-based approach to the treatment of encopresis. We are assisting in recruiting subjects for
that
study on our Home page.
